7 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climb

The 7 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climb is one of the most scenic and rewarding ways to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

Often called the Whiskey Route, Machame approaches Kilimanjaro from the southwest and passes through a remarkable variety of landscapes. The journey begins in tropical rainforest, climbs into heath and moorland, crosses the Shira Plateau, traverses beneath the southern glaciers and continues through the dramatic Barranco Valley before reaching the high alpine desert.

1
Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Starting Altitude: Approximately 1,800 metres
Finishing Altitude: Approximately 3,000 metres
Walking Time: Approximately 5–7 hours
Habitat: Tropical rainforest

After breakfast at your hotel, meet your Kilimanjaro mountain guide and support team.

Drive to Machame Gate on the southwestern side of Mount Kilimanjaro.

At the gate, your guide will complete registration while porters organize food, tents, safety equipment and permitted personal luggage.

Once formalities are complete, begin walking through the rainforest.

The lower trail may be muddy and slippery, particularly during or after rainfall.

The forest environment may include:

 • Tall trees
 • Ferns
 • Moss
 • Vines
 • Wildflowers
 • Birds
 • Blue monkeys
 • Black-and-white colobus monkeys

Wildlife sightings are possible but cannot be guaranteed.

The guide will set a slow and controlled pace from the beginning.

Even when the lower trail feels comfortable, climbing too quickly can contribute to fatigue and poor acclimatization.

Stop for lunch or snacks along the route before continuing to Machame Camp.

On arrival, the mountain crew will have prepared the campsite.

Settle into your tent, change into warm clothing and attend the evening briefing.

Dinner and overnight at Machame Camp.

Shira camp1 night
2
Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Starting Altitude: Approximately 3,000 metres
Finishing Altitude: Approximately 3,850 metres
Walking Time: Approximately 4–6 hours
Habitat: Rainforest, heath and moorland

After breakfast, leave Machame Camp and continue upward.

The trail gradually becomes steeper and the vegetation begins to change.

As the forest thins, climbers enter the heath and moorland zone.

The route crosses rocky ridges and open terrain with possible views of:

 • Kibo summit dome
 • Shira Plateau
 • Mount Meru
 • Southern glaciers
 • Surrounding lowlands

The day is shorter than the first but includes a significant increase in altitude.

Walking slowly remains important.

Arrive at Shira Camp in the afternoon.

Depending on weather and energy levels, your guide may arrange a short acclimatization walk before dinner.

This additional movement can help the body adjust and may improve sleep.

The Shira Plateau is the remains of an ancient volcanic caldera and forms one of the most distinctive landscapes on Kilimanjaro.

Dinner and overnight at Shira Camp.

Barranco Camp1 night
3
Shira Camp to Lava Tower and Barranco Camp

Starting Altitude: Approximately 3,850 metres
Highest Point: Approximately 4,600 metres
Finishing Altitude: Approximately 3,950 metres
Walking Time: Approximately 6–8 hours
Habitat: Moorland and alpine desert

Today is one of the most important acclimatization days of the climb.

After breakfast, begin trekking eastward toward Lava Tower.

The vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you enter the alpine desert.

The trail climbs gradually through exposed volcanic terrain.

As altitude increases, some climbers may experience:

 • Headache
 • Fatigue
 • Reduced appetite
 • Mild nausea
 • Shortness of breath
 • Dizziness
 • Slower movement

All symptoms should be reported honestly to the guide.

Reach Lava Tower at approximately 4,600 metres.

Depending on weather and group progress, enjoy lunch or a short break nearby.

The purpose of reaching Lava Tower is to expose the body to a higher altitude before descending to sleep lower at Barranco Camp.

After the break, descend into Barranco Valley.

The environment changes again as vegetation returns.

Giant groundsels and lobelias may appear around the valley.

Arrive at Barranco Camp beneath the dramatic Barranco Wall.

The camp offers impressive views of Kibo, the southern glaciers and the surrounding valley when weather is clear.

Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp.

Karanga Camp1 night
4
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Starting Altitude: Approximately 3,950 metres
Finishing Altitude: Approximately 4,035 metres
Walking Time: Approximately 4–6 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert

After breakfast, begin the climb up the Barranco Wall.

The wall looks intimidating from camp, but it is normally climbed by scrambling over rock rather than technical climbing.

Guides and assistant guides will help climbers through narrower sections.

Hands may be used for balance, and the pace is controlled carefully.

One well-known section is sometimes called the Kissing Rock because climbers pass close to the rock face.

The Barranco Wall can be crowded during busy periods, so patience is important.

At the top, enjoy views across the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro.

Continue through a series of ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp.

The trail includes both descents and ascents, making the day more demanding than the modest altitude gain may suggest.

Cross the Karanga Valley before the final climb to camp.

Arrive in time for lunch or a late meal, depending on the day’s pace.

Spend the afternoon resting, hydrating and preparing for the upper mountain.

Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp.

Barafu Camp1 night
5
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Starting Altitude: Approximately 4,035 metres
Finishing Altitude: Approximately 4,640 metres
Walking Time: Approximately 3–5 hours
Habitat: High alpine desert

After breakfast, leave Karanga Camp and continue toward Barafu Camp.

The landscape becomes increasingly dry and exposed.

Vegetation is minimal, and the trail crosses volcanic rock and high-altitude desert.

Because this is a shorter trekking day, arrive at Barafu with time to rest and prepare for summit night.

Barafu means ice in Swahili, and conditions may be cold, windy and exposed.

Your guide will conduct a detailed summit briefing covering:

 • Departure time
 • Clothing layers
 • Headlamp use
 • Water management
 • Snacks
 • Rest stops
 • Group order
 • Communication
 • Turning-back decisions
 • Altitude symptoms
 • Crater-rim conditions

Organize your summit equipment carefully.

Keep essential items inside your tent where they are easy to find in darkness.

Eat an early dinner and rest.

Most groups begin the summit attempt around midnight, depending on weather, group condition and guide planning.

Sleep may be limited because of altitude and anticipation.

Mweka Camp1 night
6
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Mweka Camp

Starting Altitude: Approximately 4,640 metres
Highest Altitude: 5,895 metres
Finishing Altitude: Approximately 3,100 metres
Total Walking Time: Approximately 12–16 hours
Habitat: Arctic summit zone, alpine desert and moorland

Wake around midnight, dress in warm layers and have a light meal or hot drink.

Begin the summit ascent in darkness.

The trail climbs steeply toward the crater rim.

The pace is extremely slow and controlled.

Conditions may include:

 • Freezing temperatures
 • Strong wind
 • Snow
 • Ice
 • Loose scree
 • Dust
 • Darkness
 • Low visibility
 • Extreme fatigue

The route passes upward toward Stella Point.

Climbers may experience:

 • Headache
 • Nausea
 • Weakness
 • Cold hands or feet
 • Shortness of breath
 • Reduced coordination
 • Emotional changes
 • Difficulty concentrating

All symptoms must be reported immediately.

The guide has full authority to stop a climber’s ascent when safety is at risk.

Reach Stella Point at approximately 5,756 metres on the crater rim.

This is a major achievement.

Climbers who remain medically stable may continue toward Uhuru Peak.

The final section follows the crater rim past glaciers and high-altitude landscapes.

Reach Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa.

Time at the summit is usually brief due to cold, altitude and crowding.

Take photographs, celebrate and begin descending.

Return first to Barafu Camp for a short rest and meal.

Then continue descending toward Mweka Camp.

The descent is long and can be demanding on knees and legs.

Arrive at Mweka Camp for dinner and overnight.

Departure
7
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Starting Altitude: Approximately 3,100 metres
Finishing Altitude: Approximately 1,640 metres
Walking Time: Approximately 3–5 hours
Habitat: Moorland and tropical rainforest

After breakfast, begin the final descent.

The trail returns through moorland and tropical rainforest.

Conditions may be wet, muddy and slippery.

Trekking poles remain useful, especially after the long summit day.

Continue to Mweka Gate and complete the park sign-out procedure.

Successful climbers may receive certificates according to the highest officially reached point and current park procedures.

Meet the vehicle and transfer to your hotel.

Enjoy a hot shower, rest and a celebratory meal.
