7 Days Umbwe Route Kilimanjaro Climb

Walking Time: 5–7 Hours

After breakfast, transfer to Umbwe Gate where registration formalities are completed.

Meet your mountain crew before entering one of Kilimanjaro’s least visited forests.

The trail climbs almost immediately through dense rainforest.

Unlike Machame or Marangu, Umbwe wastes little time gaining altitude.

The route follows narrow forest paths beneath giant trees covered in moss and ferns.

Today’s climb is steep and demanding.

The trail leaves the rainforest and enters giant heath and moorland.

The route climbs exposed ridges before descending dramatically into Barranco Valley.

The scenery changes dramatically throughout the day.

Large giant groundsels and lobelias become increasingly common.

Arrive beneath the impressive Barranco Wall.

Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp.

Walking Time: 4–6 Hours

Begin the morning by climbing the famous Barranco Wall.

Despite its appearance, the wall is not normally considered technical climbing.

Guides assist climbers through narrow sections.

At the top, enjoy sweeping views across the Southern Circuit.

Continue through rolling valleys before reaching Karanga Camp.

Spend the afternoon resting and preparing for higher altitude.

Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp.

Walking Time: 3–5 Hours

Continue gradually toward Barafu Camp through high alpine desert.

Vegetation becomes almost nonexistent.

Arrive early enough to rest before summit night.

Following lunch, your guide conducts the summit briefing covering:

An early dinner is served before resting.

Most summit attempts begin around midnight.

Walking Time: 12–15 Hours

Wake shortly before midnight.

Begin climbing slowly toward Stella Point.

Temperatures may fall well below freezing.

Strong winds, snow and loose volcanic scree are possible.

Reach Stella Point before continuing toward Uhuru Peak.

The final section follows the crater rim.

After photographs at Africa’s highest point, begin descending.

Return to Barafu Camp for a short break before continuing to Millennium Camp.

Stopping at Millennium Camp instead of continuing directly to Mweka provides valuable recovery after summit day.

Dinner and overnight at Millennium Camp.

Walking Time: 3–5 Hours

Today’s shorter trek allows your body to recover after the demanding summit day.

Continue descending through moorland toward Mweka Camp.

The trail gradually re-enters greener vegetation.

Spend the afternoon resting, celebrating and sharing experiences with your mountain crew.

Dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp.

Walking Time: 3–5 Hours

After breakfast, descend through tropical rainforest.

The trail can be muddy, especially after rain.

Upon arrival at Mweka Gate, complete park exits formalities.

Successful climbers receive summit certificates according to the highest officially reached point.

Transfer back to your hotel for a well-earned shower and celebration.
