Shifting Sand
Home | Shifting Sand
The Shifting Sand is a unique crescent-shaped dune made from black volcanic ash, slowly moving across the plains as the wind carries it forward.
Unlike the golden sand dunes found in deserts, this remarkable formation has a dark volcanic colour and a fascinating story connected to the nearby Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano. Its unusual appearance and mysterious movement make it one of the most interesting places to visit during a Northern Tanzania safari.
One of Tanzania’s Most Unique Landscapes
The Shifting Sand is unlike any other landscape you will see during your safari. Standing alone on the open plains, this dark volcanic dune creates a striking contrast against the surrounding grasslands of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
What makes the Shifting Sand even more fascinating is that it continues to move. Slowly pushed by the wind, the dune changes its position over time, creating a rare natural phenomenon that is difficult to find anywhere else in the world.

the Story Behind the Shifting Sand
The Shifting Sands are a remarkable black volcanic ash dune found near Oldoinyo Lengai, the Maasai’s sacred “Mountain of God,” in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Formed from volcanic ash carried by the wind, the crescent-shaped dune slowly moves across the plains, about 15 to 20 meters each year, while remarkably maintaining its unique shape.
For the Maasai, the Shifting Sands hold deep cultural significance and are seen as a symbol of the powerful connection between nature and the sacred mountain. Today, this ever-moving dune remains one of Tanzania’s most fascinating natural wonders, attracting visitors eager to witness a landscape that is constantly changing.
A Natural Wonder Near Olduvai Gorge
The Shifting Sand is located close to Olduvai Gorge, one of the world’s most important archaeological sites. Visiting both locations provides a unique combination of natural and human history during your safari.
While Olduvai Gorge tells the story of early human discoveries, the Shifting Sand reveals the powerful geological forces that have shaped the land around it. Together, they offer a deeper understanding of the remarkable landscapes found between the Serengeti and Ngorongoro.
