Game drives
The majority of wildlife viewing in the Serengeti takes place in the form of expertly-guided 4×4 game drives. These drives take place in the early morning and again from mid-afternoon to avoid the heat of the day. This is when the animals are at their most active too. With the constant movement of so many herbivores across the land, predator–prey interactions are frequent!
Most of the big cats do their hunting at night, so it’s the very early morning start that can often be the most exciting, with action still taking place as the sun comes up. Conversely, cheetah hunt during the day to avoid competition, so they can be seen on afternoon drives looking primed. Your guide will demonstrate eyesight abilities you did not think possible as they effortlessly scan the horizon for wildlife.
Great Migration
The Serengeti is the main location of the Great Migration. With over 1.5 million wildebeest and zebra traversing the Serengeti and Mara ecosystems throughout the year, the herds are constantly on the move and their location can be well predicted. At any time of the year, you can choose a camp in their path. From the Ndutu Plains in the south for calving season (Jan–March), they travel in a clockwise arc through the west and centre (June–July), finally reaching the Mara River for the famous river crossings (July–Oct).
The herds spend several months crossing between the northern Serengeti and the Maasai Mara, always in search of fresh grasses. The Serengeti side tends to be the less busy because there are only a certain number of camps in the region, and a flight is needed to access it.
Hot air balloon safari
This is often a bucket list activity! Watching the sun come up over the African plains is a memory that will live long. It’s a very early start to ensure you are airborne for sunrise. Chat to your specialist about which camps are best located for this activity. Hot air balloon safaris are available throughout the park, with most flights taking place in the eastern Serengeti.
