Arrival in Arusha

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport, you will be met by a Quest Horizon Safaris representative.

After assistance with your luggage, transfer privately to your accommodation in Arusha.

Arusha is located near the foot of Mount Meru and serves as the gateway to Northern Tanzania’s safari destinations.

Depending on your arrival time, spend the remainder of the day relaxing at your accommodation. You may enjoy the gardens, arrange an optional activity or simply recover from your international journey.

A safari briefing will be provided before departure. This will cover the route, expected driving times, weather conditions, wildlife-viewing practices, baggage requirements and flight arrangements.

Dinner and overnight in Arusha.

Arusha to Tarangire National Park and Karatu

After breakfast, meet your professional safari guide and depart for Tarangire National Park.

The route passes rural communities, agricultural areas, Maasai grazing lands and the open countryside of Northern Tanzania.

Tarangire is known for its ancient baobab trees, large elephant population and the river that provides the park with its name.

During your game drive, explore open grasslands, acacia woodland, seasonal swamps and riverine habitats.

Elephants may be encountered in family groups, feeding beneath baobabs or moving toward the river. Other possible wildlife includes lions, leopards, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, impalas, waterbucks and warthogs.

The green season transforms Tarangire into a lush landscape, and migratory birds add to the park’s already impressive birdlife.

Enjoy a picnic lunch in the park and continue your afternoon game drive.

Later, leave Tarangire and travel toward Karatu or the Ngorongoro Highlands for dinner and overnight.

3
Ngorongoro Crater Safari

Depart early for the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

After completing entrance formalities, continue to the crater rim and descend approximately 600 metres to the crater floor.

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and supports a remarkable concentration of wildlife throughout the year.

Its grasslands, forests, freshwater springs, wetlands and alkaline lake provide habitat for lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, spotted hyenas and numerous antelope species.

The crater is also one of Tanzania’s more reliable locations for seeing the endangered black rhinoceros, although sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Explore the Lerai Forest, open plains and the shores of Lake Magadi. During the green season, the crater landscape is often particularly beautiful, with fresh grass, dramatic clouds and abundant birdlife.

Enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated location before continuing your game drive.

In the afternoon, ascend to the crater rim and return to your accommodation in Karatu or the Ngorongoro Highlands.

Ngorongoro Highlands to Ndutu

After breakfast, depart the highlands and travel toward the Ndutu ecosystem.

The journey passes through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where Maasai communities, livestock and wildlife share an extensive protected landscape.

Depending on road conditions and wildlife movements, the route may cross open plains, volcanic landscapes and seasonal grazing areas.

An optional visit to Olduvai Gorge Museum may be arranged for guests interested in archaeology, geology and human origins.

As you approach Ndutu, the environment changes into a mixture of short-grass plains, acacia woodland and seasonal lakes.

From approximately late December through March, this region becomes one of the main centers of the Great Migration. Large herds of wildebeest and zebras gather to feed on fresh grass produced by the seasonal rains.

Begin your first game drive in the Ndutu region while travelling toward your tented camp or lodge.

Possible sightings include wildebeest, zebras, giraffes, elephants, cheetahs, lions, spotted hyenas and numerous gazelle species.

Arrive at your accommodation in the late afternoon or early evening.

5
Full-Day Ndutu Calving Safari

Spend the entire day exploring Ndutu and the surrounding short-grass plains.

During the peak calving period, vast numbers of wildebeest give birth across the southern migration grounds. Newborn calves may be seen standing within minutes and moving with their mothers soon afterward.

The concentration of vulnerable young animals attracts predators. Lions may patrol the edges of the herds, cheetahs use the open plains to hunt and spotted hyenas move through the landscape in search of opportunities.

Your guide will use recent sightings and knowledge of rainfall patterns to determine the most productive route.

The herds are not always found in one place. They may spread between the Ndutu plains, areas around the seasonal lakes, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Southern Serengeti.

Carry a picnic lunch to allow maximum flexibility and remain close to active wildlife areas.

In addition to the migration, the region supports resident giraffes, elephants, jackals, bat-eared foxes, servals, caracals and a wide variety of birds.

Return to your accommodation in the evening.

6
Southern Serengeti and Ndutu Migration Safari

Enjoy a second complete day exploring the migration grounds.

The additional day is important because the herds move constantly in response to rainfall and grazing conditions. Areas that are productive one afternoon may be quiet the following morning.

Your guide will adapt the route according to current wildlife reports. The day may involve travelling farther into the Southern Serengeti, returning to active calving areas or exploring the woodland and lake habitats around Ndutu.

The short-grass plains provide excellent visibility, making this one of the best seasons for observing cheetahs. These fast predators often use raised ground or safari vehicles as vantage points while searching for prey.

Lions and hyenas may follow the wildebeest herds, while leopards are more commonly associated with the wooded areas and riverine habitats.

Guests may choose a full-day safari with picnic lunch or separate morning and afternoon game drives, depending on wildlife activity and the location of the accommodation.

Return for your final evening in the southern Serengeti ecosystem.

Departure
7
Ndutu Game Drive and Flight to Arusha

Begin your final day with an early morning game drive in the Ndutu region.

The cooler hours provide an excellent opportunity to observe predators, active herds and newborn animals before the temperature rises.

Depending on the flight schedule, return for breakfast or continue with a picnic meal before transferring to the nearest operational airstrip.

Board a scheduled light-aircraft flight to Arusha.

The flight offers aerial views of the southern Serengeti plains, Ngorongoro Highlands and the landscapes of Northern Tanzania.

Upon arrival, a Quest Horizon Safaris representative will transfer you to:
