Rongai Gate to Simba Camp
Rongai Route Begins • Quiet Northern Trails

Starting Altitude: Approximately 1,950 metres
Finishing Altitude: Approximately 2,625 metres
Walking Time: Approximately 3–5 hours
Habitat: Cultivated foothills, forest and open woodland
After breakfast at your hotel, meet your Kilimanjaro mountain guide and support team.
Drive toward the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro.
The journey is generally longer than transfers to southern trailheads and may pass through rural communities, farmland and areas close to the Kenya border.
At the gate, your guide completes the required registration while porters organize food, tents, safety equipment and permitted personal luggage.
Once formalities are completed, begin the trek through cultivated land, forest and open woodland.
The route is often quieter than Kilimanjaro’s more frequently used southern trails.
Possible wildlife sightings may include:
- Colobus monkeys
- Blue monkeys
- Small antelope
- Birds
- Forest mammals
Wildlife encounters cannot be guaranteed.
The gradient is generally steady, allowing the guide to establish a slow and controlled pace.
Walking pole pole from the beginning helps conserve energy and supports gradual acclimatization.
Arrive at Simba Camp in the late afternoon.
The camp may provide views toward the Kenyan plains when the weather is clear.
Settle into your tent, change into warm clothing and attend the evening briefing and health check.
Dinner and overnight at Simba Camp.
Simba Camp to Second Cave
Simba Camp to Second Cave • Into the Moorland

Starting Altitude: Approximately 2,625 metres
Finishing Altitude: Approximately 3,450 metres
Walking Time: Approximately 5–7 hours
Habitat: Heath and moorland
After breakfast, continue upward through increasingly open terrain.
The forest gives way to heath and moorland.
Vegetation becomes shorter as the trail gains altitude.
Depending on weather conditions, climbers may enjoy views of:
- Kibo summit dome
- Northern Kilimanjaro
- Kenyan plains
- Eastern Mawenzi
- Open volcanic landscapes
The route continues steadily toward Second Cave.
This is a meaningful altitude gain, so the guide will maintain a deliberately slow pace.
Some climbers may begin noticing:
- Faster breathing
- Mild headache
- Reduced appetite
- Fatigue
- Disturbed sleep
- Mild nausea
All symptoms should be reported honestly to the mountain guide.
Do not hide discomfort in an attempt to appear strong.
After reaching camp, rest, hydrate and enjoy the surrounding open landscape.
Depending on the day’s timing and group condition, the guide may arrange a short acclimatization walk.
Dinner and overnight near Second Cave.
Second Cave to Kikelewa Camp
Second Cave • High Mountain Landscapes

Starting Altitude: Approximately 3,450 metres
Finishing Altitude: Approximately 3,600 metres
Walking Time: Approximately 3–5 hours
Habitat: Heath, moorland and alpine transition
After breakfast, leave Second Cave and begin traversing southeast toward Mawenzi.
Although the overall altitude gain is modest, the trail crosses rolling terrain and exposed slopes.
The shorter trekking day helps climbers conserve energy and continue adjusting to altitude.
Vegetation gradually becomes more sparse.
The views of Mawenzi become increasingly impressive as its jagged volcanic ridges dominate the eastern skyline.
The route enters the Kikelewa Valley, a relatively sheltered area with a peaceful mountain atmosphere.
Arrive at Kikelewa Camp and enjoy lunch or refreshments.
During the afternoon, rest or take a short-guided acclimatization walk, depending on weather and group health.
The mountain team will conduct a health assessment and discuss the following day’s climb toward Mawenzi Tarn.
Dinner and overnight at Kikelewa Camp.
Mountain Expert Tip
Shorter trekking days are not wasted days. They provide valuable time for recovery, hydration and altitude monitoring before the route reaches more demanding elevations.
Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn
Mawenzi Tarn • One of Kilimanjaro’s Most Scenic Camps

Starting Altitude: Approximately 3,600 metres
Finishing Altitude: Approximately 4,315 metres
Walking Time: Approximately 4–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland and alpine desert
After breakfast, begin climbing toward Mawenzi Tarn.
The trail becomes steeper as it rises through increasingly sparse vegetation.
Views expand across the northern and eastern sides of Kilimanjaro.
The jagged spires of Mawenzi dominate the landscape.
As altitude increases, the walking may feel more demanding despite the moderate distance.
Continue slowly and report any symptoms such as headache, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue.
Mawenzi Tarn lies in a dramatic cirque beneath Mawenzi Peak.
It is one of the most scenic high-altitude camps on Kilimanjaro.
After arrival, enjoy lunch and rest.
Depending on your condition, weather and guide assessment, take an afternoon acclimatization walk on the ridges above camp.
The purpose is to gain additional altitude before returning to sleep lower at the tarn.
Dinner and overnight at Mawenzi Tarn Camp.
Mawenzi Tarn Acclimatization and Exploration
Climb High, Sleep Low • Mawenzi Tarn

Sleeping Altitude: Approximately 4,315 metres
Highest Walking Point: Determined by guide, weather and group condition

After breakfast, begin a gradual guided walk toward a nearby ridge or suitable high point.
The exact route depends on:
- Weather
- Trail conditions
- Group health
- Visibility
- Park procedures
- Guide assessment
The walk allows climbers to spend additional time above 4,000 metres before crossing to Kibo Hut.
The principle is to climb higher during the day and return to sleep at Mawenzi Tarn.
During the excursion, enjoy views of:
- Mawenzi’s rugged ridges
- The high saddle
- Kibo summit dome
- Northern plains
- Alpine desert formations
The guide may use the walk to discuss:
- Altitude symptoms
- Hydration

- Water management
- Mental preparation
- Turning-back procedures
Return to camp for lunch and rest.
Spend the afternoon preparing personal equipment for the higher section.

Possible conditions include:
- Strong sunlight
- Cold wind
- Dust

Eat an early meal and attend the summit briefing.
Your guide will review:
- Departure time
- Clothing layers
- Headlamp use
- Water storage

This is a significant achievement.
Climbers who remain medically stable may continue around the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak.
The final section may take approximately 1½–2 hours or longer, depending on conditions and pace.
Reach Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa.
Time at the summit is generally brief because of cold, altitude and possible crowding.
Take photographs and begin descending.
Return to Kibo Hut for a short rest and meal.
Continue downward to Horombo Hut.
The descent is long and physically demanding.
Arrive at Horombo for dinner and overnight.
Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
